How to read a zodiac wheel
Find Aries, go counterclockwise in 30° steps, read the element colors, then look straight across for each sign's opposite.
Find Aries
This chart puts Aries at 9 o’clock, at 0°, the point the Sun reaches at the March equinox.
Go counterclockwise
Each sign fills 30°: Taurus starts at 30°, Gemini at 60°, Pisces at 330°. Birth charts number their houses in the same direction.
Read the pattern
Elements repeat Fire, Earth, Air, Water 3 times. Modalities repeat Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable 4 times.
Look across
The sign 180° away is its opposite. Opposites always share a modality.

The 4 cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, each begin at an equinox or a solstice: in March, June, September and December. The element and modality buttons on the zodiac wheel use these same groups.
Dates
Why zodiac sign dates differ by a day
The usual printed dates can be a day off in some years, because the Sun enters each sign at a set moment, not at midnight. This zodiac wheel uses the Western tropical zodiac.
The tropical zodiac starts each year at the March equinox and splits the Sun's yearly path into 12 equal parts of 30°. That moment drifts by up to a day from year to year, and it depends on your time zone.
The ranges aren't equal in length. Capricorn is the shortest at 29 days and Cancer the longest at 32, counted in a 365-day year. In a leap year, February 29 falls in Pisces.
Other systems use other dates. The sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology differs, and the Chinese zodiac is a separate 12-year animal cycle; neither is on this wheel. The signs share names with 12 constellations, but each sign is a fixed 30° section.

How many zodiac signs are there?
The Western zodiac has 12 signs, and the wheel starts with all of them. They run from Aries to Pisces.
What order are the signs in on a zodiac wheel?
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. The order follows the year from the March equinox.
What is my sign if I was born on a cusp?
The usual printed range gives one sign, and the birthday lookup names the neighboring sign as well. The exact change-over moment depends on the year and your time zone.
What are the 4 zodiac elements?
Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Each element has 3 signs, such as Aries, Leo and Sagittarius for Fire.
Why do some signs have 2 ruling planets?
Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces have a traditional ruler and a modern one. The modern rulers, Pluto, Uranus and Neptune, were added after those planets were discovered.
Can I add Ophiuchus or other entries?
Yes. Type any entry on a new line in the Entries box. Entries that are not signs stay on the wheel when you change the filters.
Is the Chinese zodiac on this wheel?
No. The wheel uses the 12 Western signs. Type the 12 animals into Entries to spin those instead.
