How to use the random MLB team generator

This wheel of MLB teams starts full, so an MLB wheel spin takes one tap. The filters come in when you want a smaller field, and lines you type yourself survive every filter change.

  1. Pick the leagues

Keep the full 30-team wheel, or press American League, National League or a division such as NL Central to take those teams off.

  2. Fine-tune by club

The Pick teams one by one checklist lets you tick exact clubs, such as the teams still alive in October.

  3. Spin

Spin with the button, a click on the wheel or the Space bar. You’ll see a result such as “AL West · American League”.

  4. Spin again

Spin as often as you like. Press Remove first if that team should sit out, or Undo in the Entries tab to reverse a filter.

League or division button looks dashed? Some of its clubs are missing from the wheel. Press it once more to fill the group back in.

Road trip

Ballpark road trips with the random MLB team generator

To plan a ballpark trip, draw 5 teams with Several, no repeats and visit those parks. Type 5 as the number to pick and press Pick. Each club leaves the wheel once drawn, so no park repeats, and Quick spins keep each turn to 1 second. Copy list hands you the stops in draw order, and the Results tab stores the draw with its time.

The draw mixes eras. Four parks hosted their first MLB game before 1970, led by Fenway Park (1912) and Wrigley Field (1914). Of the 30, 17 first hosted MLB in 2000 or later.

Want a tighter route? Press No teams and add one division, or tick neighbors in the checklist. The random state generator works for a trip that starts from a state instead of a team.

House rules for a spun road trip

  • Draw order is the route. Visit the parks in the order they came out, or sort them by distance once the draw is done.
  • Agree on one reroll. Decide before the draw whether a park you have already seen can be swapped for a fresh spin.
  • Mind the border. A draw that lands on the Toronto Blue Jays means a game in Toronto, so check travel documents early.
  • Check the schedule first. A club away on a long road swing may have no home games in your window; spin again for that stop.

With 5 people in October, each gets 2 and 2 teams go to random people or sit out. "Deal them too" hands those out 1 each; "Set them aside" lists them as not dealt. The shuffle also sets the seating order, so nobody can steer who gets which team, and Copy or Download CSV saves the result. Format from MLB.com's postseason explainer.

Athletics

Why the random MLB team list says “Athletics”

MLB lists the club as plain “Athletics”, so the wheel shows that name with no city. MLB.com gives its ballpark as Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California, and the team plays in the AL West.

MLB.com's ballpark guide calls Sutter Health Park the A's home from 2025 to 2027, until their new park in Las Vegas opens in 2028. The Nicknames option leaves “Athletics” as it is; every other club shortens, such as Red Sox or Blue Jays.

The newest clubs on the wheel are the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Rays. Both played their first season in 1998, bringing MLB to 30 clubs, per MLB's expansion-era glossary.

The Toronto Blue Jays are the only club based in Canada. Three nicknames (Rangers, Cardinals and Giants) also belong to football or hockey teams, but the MLB wheel only recognizes baseball clubs.
